Each way, dead heats and Rule 4
Each way
An each-way bet is a win bet and a place bet of the same stake. If the selection wins, both parts pay; if it only places, the place part pays at the place terms, such as 1/4 of the odds. In multiples, the win parts and the place parts are settled as two separate bets.
Dead heats
When runners tie for first, the stake on that selection is divided by the number tied and paid at full odds on the portion that remains. A two-way dead heat halves the return on the win part.
Rule 4
If a horse is withdrawn late, bookmakers deduct a set amount in the pound from winnings on the remaining runners, depending on the withdrawn horse's price. Your stake is not affected, only the profit.
Non-runners
A selection that doesn't run is void: the stake goes through the rest of a multiple unchanged, or is returned on a single.
Questions
What is an each-way bet?
Two bets of the same stake: one to win and one to place. The place part pays a fraction of the odds (often 1/4 or 1/5) if your selection finishes in the places. A £5 each-way bet (£10 in total) at 5/1 with 1/4 odds returns £41.25 if it wins and £11.25 if it only places.
How much does a Lucky 15 pay?
It depends on the odds and how many selections win. A Lucky 15 is 15 bets (4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and a four-fold), so £1 a line costs £15. With four 2/1 winners it returns £255.00. Many bookmakers add bonuses (double odds on one winner, a bonus for four), which vary and are not included here.
What is a Yankee bet?
Eleven bets on four selections: 6 doubles, 4 trebles and one four-fold. At least two selections must win for a return. A Lucky 15 is a Yankee plus the four singles.
How is an accumulator worked out?
Multiply the decimal odds of every selection and then by your stake. Fractional odds convert by dividing and adding one: 2/1 is 3.00, 5/4 is 2.25. A £10 treble at 2/1, 5/4 and evens pays 10 × 3 × 2.25 × 2 = £135.
What is Rule 4?
A deduction from winnings (not stakes) when a horse is withdrawn after you placed your bet, because the remaining runners had a better chance. It is quoted in pence in the pound: a 20p Rule 4 cuts £100 of winnings to £80. Tick “Rule 4” in the calculator and enter the deduction for each selection.
What happens to a non-runner in a multiple?
A non-runner is settled as void: the stake on that selection rolls on, so a double with one non-runner becomes a single on the other selection. Choose “Non-runner / void” for it in the calculator.
