Keno strategy: what the maths says
What it can do
Choose the pay table and the number of spots with the best return, and decide how often you want to win: on NC Keno, 4 spots wins most often, while 10 spots has the biggest prize and the best return.
What it can't do
Pick better numbers. Every draw is independent and every number is equally likely, so hot, cold or “due” numbers and patterns on the board make no difference.
Questions
How do keno odds work?
Keno draws 20 numbers from 80. The chance of catching c of the k numbers you picked is C(k, c) × C(80 − k, 20 − c) ÷ C(80, 20): the ways to hit c of yours and miss with the rest, divided by all possible draws. The pay table then decides what each catch is worth.
What are the odds of hitting 10 out of 10 in keno?
1 in 8,911,711. Catching 9 of 10 is 1 in 163,381, and catching none of your 10 numbers is 1 in 21.84.
How many numbers should you pick in keno?
It depends on the pay table, and the calculator shows it for yours. On NC Keno, 10 spots returns the most (66.7%) and 1 spot the least (50.0%), while 4 spots wins something most often (1 in 3.86).
Is there a keno strategy that works?
Not for picking numbers: every draw is 20 fresh numbers from 80, so hot, cold and overdue numbers have exactly the same chance as any other. What you can choose is the pay table and how many spots you play, which set your return and how often you win.
What is the house edge in keno?
High, compared with most casino games. NC Keno returns 50% to 66.7% depending on the spots you play, a house edge of about 33% to 50%. Online keno pay tables vary by game: type yours into the calculator to see its return.
Is the NC Keno Multiplier worth it?
It doubles the price of the ticket, and from NC's published odds the average multiplier works out to about 2.0×. So on average it pays back what it costs: it makes prizes bigger and rarer without improving the return.
