French roulette uses the European wheel and payouts; with La Partage (or En Prison) an even-money bet loses only half its stake when the zero lands, so its house edge falls to 1.35%.
Why every bet has the same house edge
The payouts assume 36 pockets
A bet on k numbers pays (36 ÷ k) − 1 to 1: a single number pays 35 to 1, a dozen 2 to 1, red 1 to 1. That would be a fair game on a wheel of 36 numbers. The zero makes it 37, so every bet gives back 36/37 of its stake on average and the casino keeps 1/37 — 2.70%. The double zero makes it 36/38, a house edge of 5.26%.
So choosing between bets changes how often you win and how much, not how much you lose on average. A straight-up bet wins rarely and big; red wins almost half the time and small. Both cost 2.70% of what you stake over time.
The exceptions
- La Partage and En Prison (French tables): when the zero lands, an even-money bet loses half, or is held for the next spin. The edge on those bets is about halved, to 1.35% with La Partage.
- Top line (American only): 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 pays 6 to 1 on 5 numbers — the worst bet on the table at 7.89%.
- Lightning Roulette (Evolution): a straight-up bet pays 29 to 1, plus 50x–500x on the one to five Lucky Numbers struck each round. Every other bet pays as standard, so it keeps the 2.70% edge.

If a casino offers more than one, the French table (with La Partage or En Prison) is the cheapest place for even-money bets, and the American wheel the most expensive for everything.

A single number is “due” after 37 spins only on average: it misses all 37 about 36% of the time. The wheel has no memory — every spin starts from the same odds.

What are the odds of winning at roulette?
It depends on the bet. On a European wheel a single number wins 1 time in 37 (2.70%), a dozen 12 in 37 (32.43%) and red or black 18 in 37 (48.65%). The payouts are set just below the true odds, which is where the house edge comes from.
Which roulette bet has the best odds?
Every standard bet on a single-zero wheel has the same house edge, 2.70%, so none is better value than another; they differ only in how often they win and how much. The exceptions are the French La Partage rule, which cuts even-money bets to 1.35%, and the American top-line bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) at 7.89%.
Which is better, European or American roulette?
European. The American wheel adds a double zero, which nearly doubles the house edge from 2.70% to 5.26% on the same payouts. French roulette is a single-zero wheel that, with La Partage or En Prison, gives back half of an even-money stake when the zero lands.
What does roulette pay?
Straight up 35 to 1, split 17 to 1, street 11 to 1, corner 8 to 1, six line 5 to 1, dozens and columns 2 to 1, and red/black, odd/even and 1–18/19–36 even money. The American top line pays 6 to 1.
What is the house edge in roulette?
2.70% on a single-zero wheel: a bet covering k numbers pays as if there were 36 pockets, while there are 37. On the double-zero wheel it is 5.26% (2 in 38).
How does Lightning Roulette pay?
