Dr Zappo is a Hacksaw Gaming slot released on 29 September 2026, built around a mad scientist, his companion Mr. Brain and a set of Eyeball symbols that shoot across the reels and turn paying symbols into Wilds. The headline numbers are a top RTP of 96.31%, a volatility rating of 3/5 on Hacksaw's own five-point scale and a maximum win of 10,000x the stake. The free demo above runs the studio's demo build with play money only, so it is a safe way to see how the Eyeballs behave before deciding whether the game deserves real stakes at all. Casinofy is for players aged 18+.
How Dr Zappo Plays
The game sits on a 5x4 grid, five reels and four rows, and pays on 14 paylines. Hacksaw's own page lists the win type simply as paylines; the line count and grid size come from public game data rather than the studio's page. Fourteen lines on a twenty-position grid is a narrow structure, and it means a standard line win needs a run of matching symbols starting from the left. Most of what makes a spin interesting therefore comes from Wilds rather than from the base paytable.
The core loop is straightforward. Eyeball symbols land, then shoot in one of three directions: straight up, diagonally to the left or diagonally to the right. Every paying symbol in the Eyeball's path becomes a Wild. Because a Wild substitutes across several of the 14 lines at once, a single Eyeball firing up a column can connect lines that would otherwise have missed. Bets run from £0.10 to £100 per spin, which covers casual and higher-stake players alike.
The hit rate in public game data is 45%, which works out to a winning spin roughly once in every 2.2 spins. That is a frequent hit rate, but many of those hits will be small line wins that return less than the stake. A high hit rate keeps a balance moving slowly rather than steadily growing it.
Dr Zappo Features
Wild Eyeball Symbols
The Eyeball is the engine of the game. When it lands it fires in one of its three directions and transforms paying symbols into Wilds along the way. In maths terms this is a variable-size Wild generator: an Eyeball firing straight up a column converts up to the whole reel, while a diagonal shot crosses several reels and can touch more lines. How often Eyeballs land in the base game is not published, and that is the single most important number for judging the base game, because almost all of the meaningful wins depend on it.
Energy Fields
When an Eyeball shoots into an Energy Field, it bounces off and continues in another direction, transforming more symbols on its way. If it hits an existing Wild or another Eyeball, it adds a Multiplier value to that Wild. This is where the upside of the game lives: bounces extend the path, and repeated hits stack multipliers onto Wilds that are already in play. Hacksaw does not publish where the Energy Fields sit on the grid, nor the multiplier values a Wild can carry, so the true size of a well-placed bounce cannot be worked out from the studio's documentation.
The Three Bonus Games
Landing 3 or more FS symbols at the same time triggers one of three bonus games, each worth 10 free spins:
- Eyeconic(3 FS symbols): 10 free spins with an increased chance of landing Eyeball symbols.
- No-Brainer(4 FS symbols): 10 free spins with Eyeball symbols shooting in two different directions.
- It's Electrifying(5 FS symbols, the hidden epic bonus): 10 free spins with at least 1 Eyeball landing on every free spin.
The ladder is sensible. Each tier keeps the spin count at 10 and changes only how much Eyeball activity those spins carry, so the value of a bonus rises with the number of FS symbols rather than with longer rounds. The top tier is the only one with a guaranteed Eyeball on every spin, which makes it the round where multipliers have the best chance to build. How often each tier triggers is not published, and Hacksaw does not say how much rarer the five-symbol trigger is than the other two.
Reading the Maths
At 96.31%, the top version of Dr Zappo sits in the same band as Hacksaw's recent releases: Shaolin Master and Rise of Ymir are listed at the same 96.31%, Le Zeus at 96.26% and Stormforged at 96.41%. Against the wider set of September releases it trails Gates of Olympus 2500 at 96.51% but beats Thor's Rage 2 at 96.11%. The house edge on the top version is 3.69%.
- The caveat is that Hacksaw publishes four RTP versions96.31%, 94.36%, 92.31% and 86.22%. The gap between the best and worst version is 10.09 percentage points, and the studio does not say which version a given casino runs. On the lowest version the house edge is 13.78%, more than three times the edge on the top one. If the RTP is shown in the game's information screen, check it before staking real money.
- Not published by Hacksawbonus trigger frequency, how often Eyeballs land in the base game, the multiplier values Wilds can carry, the Energy Field positions, any Bonus Buy options or prices and which RTP version a given casino runs.
Dr Zappo Compared
| Game | Studio | RTP | Volatility | Max win |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dr Zappo | Hacksaw Gaming | 96.31% | 3/5 (Hacksaw scale) | 10,000x |
| Shaolin Master | Hacksaw Gaming | 96.31% | Medium | Not published |
| Ronin Stackways | Hacksaw Gaming | 96.35% | Low | 5,000x |
| Gates of Olympus 2500 | Pragmatic Play | 96.51% | High | 25,000x |
Shaolin Master matches Dr Zappo on RTP and sits in the same middle volatility band. Ronin Stackways is the calmer option with half the maximum win, while Gates of Olympus 2500 is the high-volatility choice with a ceiling two and a half times higher. Who Dr Zappo Suits
Dr Zappo suits players who want a Hacksaw game without the studio's harshest volatility. The 3/5 rating, the frequent hit rate and a feature that can transform several symbols at once make it more forgiving than the top end of the catalogue, while the 10,000x ceiling keeps some genuine upside.
Skip it if you want a top-heavy game built for rare, huge results, because Gates of Olympus 2500 and similar titles carry higher ceilings. Skip it too if you cannot confirm which RTP version a casino runs; with an 86.22% version on the list, an unknown setting is a real risk. Players who need published bonus frequencies to plan a session will find the documentation thin. If you decide to play for real money, do so at a casino licensed in the country where you live.
Verdict
Dr Zappo is a tidy, well-structured middle-volatility slot. The Eyeball and Energy Field mechanic gives the base game a clear source of Wilds and multipliers, and the three-tier bonus ladder escalates in a logical way. The top RTP of 96.31% is in line with Hacksaw's recent releases. What holds it back is how much is missing from the published maths: no bonus frequency, no Eyeball frequency, no multiplier range, plus four RTP versions with a lowest setting at 86.22%. On the top version it is a solid choice for players who want steady action with a credible ceiling. To see what else arrived this season, browse our new slots page.
