Gem Ghosts is a 6x6 cluster slot from Bullshark Games, released on 19 August 2025 and built and distributed on Hacksaw Gaming's OpenRGS platform. The headline numbers are a default RTP of 96.24%, a hit frequency of 26.22%, a maximum win of 12,000x the stake and a volatility rating of 5 out of 5 on the studio's own scale. The demo above runs the studio's free-play build with a play-money balance, so you can watch the respin chains and the Collect phase behave without staking anything. It is a sensible way to see whether the rhythm of a one-in-four hit rate suits you before you commit real money. The game is not available to UK players; the studio's approved list covers Malta, Curacao, Denmark, Latvia, Spain, the Netherlands, Ontario, Romania, Greece, Georgia, Portugal, Colombia and Buenos Aires Province, with the UK, Sweden, Germany, Italy and Brazil excluded.
How the game plays
The theme is a ghostly treasure hunter working a haunted mine, and the presentation is brisk rather than atmospheric. Mechanically it is a cluster game on a 6x6 field: you need five or more matching symbols connected to form a win, with no paylines or ways to track. Winning clusters are removed and replaced, so a single spin can roll through several cascades before it settles.
That 6x6 footprint matters more than it sounds. Thirty-six positions is a small board by cluster standards. Compared with the 7x7 grids Bullshark uses elsewhere, there is less room for sprawling clusters to form by accident, which pushes more of the return into the features rather than into incidental base-game wins. The core loop is therefore short and punchy: spin, resolve cascades, check whether enough Wilds have survived to trigger a respin, repeat.
The features, and what each does to the maths
Multiplier Wilds
Wilds substitute for any paying symbol and each carries a multiplier drawn from 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x or 100x. The multiplier applies to every win the Wild is part of, and when several Wilds sit in the same cluster their multipliers are added together before being applied. Addition rather than multiplication is the critical detail. Three Wilds at 100x give you 300x on that cluster, not a million-fold explosion. It keeps the tail of the distribution controlled, which is exactly why the cap sits at 12,000x rather than somewhere more theatrical.
Respins
Once all wins and cascades from a regular spin are complete, if at least three Wilds remain on the grid a respin triggers. During a respin only Wilds and Scatters stay put; everything else is cleared and replaced. The multiplier values on those Wilds double with each respin. Wilds that take part in a win are cleared along with the winning symbols, and a further respin is awarded only if three or more Wilds are still standing when the dust settles.
This is a self-limiting engine, and it is well designed. Doubling multipliers is the upside; the clearing rule is the brake. The sequences that pay most are the ones where Wilds survive without winning for a round or two, building values, before a late cluster collects several of them at once. You cannot steer that, but it explains why the big results arrive in clumps rather than drifting in.
Free Spins: Haunted Harvest and Phantom Treasure
The free spin feature opens with a Collect phase that gathers Wilds, after which a single powerful Free Spin plays out. The game may then randomly award another Free Spin with its own Collect phase, repeatedly. Concentrating everything into one loaded spin per cycle is an aggressive structure: variance within the bonus is high because there are very few spins to average out.
Feature RTPs are published: Haunted Harvest returns 96.25%, Phantom Treasure 96.35%, and the FeatureSpins options (BonusHunt FeatureSpins and Spooky FeatureSpins) both return 96.31%. All four sit at or above the default base-game figure, which is unusually tidy — there is no hidden penalty for buying in, though a buy obviously accelerates how fast your bankroll is exposed.
Reading the maths
Start with the RTP versions. The default is 96.24%, but the game also ships at 94.36%, and the casino chooses which build to run. That is a 1.88 percentage point gap, which is a meaningful chunk of your expected return over a long period. Check the game's info or paytable screen at your casino before you play and confirm which version you are on.
A 26.22% hit rate means roughly one spin in four returns something, and in a cluster game with cascades plenty of those returns will be under your stake. Set against a 5-of-5 volatility rating, the picture is clear: long stretches of attrition punctuated by respin chains that actually matter.
The bonus frequencies tell the real story. In the base game, any bonus arrives once every 235.2 spins, with Haunted Harvest at 1 in 249.9 and Phantom Treasure at 1 in 3,993.7. A 500-spin session therefore expects around two bonuses, and Phantom Treasure is a genuine rarity — most players will never see it organically. The BonusHunt FeatureSpins bet shortens things dramatically to 1 in 47.1 for any bonus, 1 in 50.2 for Haunted Harvest and 1 in 769.7 for Phantom Treasure, but you pay for that frequency in stake size.
On bankroll: with bonuses this scarce and volatility at maximum, stake units should be small relative to your budget. A bankroll of several hundred base spins is the minimum sensible unit of measurement here, not fifty. The 12,000x cap is respectable but not best-in-class within this catalogue, and reaching it realistically requires a respin chain that doubles multipliers several times before collecting.
How it compares within the catalogue
| Game | RTP | Hit rate | Max win | Grid |
| Gem Ghosts | 96.24% | 26.22% | 12,000x | Cluster (6x6) |
| Piggy Cluster Hunt | 96.23% | 38.34% | 15,000x | Cluster (7x7) |
| Junkyard Kings | 96.26% | 37.14% | 12,000x | Cluster (7x7) |
| Age Of Seth | 96.29% | 29.11% | 10,000x | Cluster (6x5) |
The comparison is instructive. Against the studio's other cluster games, Gem Ghosts is distinctly the leanest on hit rate, and its RTP is marginally the lowest of the four. Age Of Seth matches it on volatility at 5 of 5 but hits more often and caps lower; Piggy Cluster Hunt is the gentle end of the range. Who it suits and who should skip it
This suits players who already know they enjoy maximum-volatility cluster maths and who treat a session as a small number of large swings. The respin engine is genuinely well engineered, the feature RTPs are honest, and the additive multiplier rule is clearly disclosed rather than buried.
Skip it if you want sustained play from a modest balance. A 26.22% hit rate on a 6x6 board with bonuses 235 spins apart is a demanding combination, and the 12,000x cap does not over-reward that demand relative to 15,000x and 20,000x titles elsewhere in the same range. Anyone offered the 94.36% build should walk away and find the default version. 18+ only; set a deposit limit before you start.
Verdict
Gem Ghosts does what the sheet says it does. The marketing promises a fast, high-variance haunted-mine hunt, and the maths — 5-of-5 volatility, a 26.22% hit rate, bonuses 235 spins apart — delivers precisely that without overselling. The doubling respin multipliers with a clearing rule attached is a smart, legible mechanic, and the feature RTPs at 96.25% to 96.35% show no sleight of hand. The reservations are real rather than fatal: the 12,000x ceiling is modest for this volatility class, Phantom Treasure at 1 in 3,993.7 is close to decorative without a FeatureSpins bet, and the existence of a 94.36% build means the player has to do the checking. A well-built, honest, uncomfortable slot.
Gem Ghosts pros & cons
- Respin engine with doubling Wild multipliers is clearly explained and genuinely drives the upside
- All four feature RTPs (96.25% to 96.35%) sit at or above the default base-game return
- Additive multiplier rule is disclosed up front rather than hidden behind vague wording
- BonusHunt FeatureSpins cuts any-bonus frequency from 1 in 235.2 to 1 in 47.1 without an RTP penalty
- Leanest hit rate of the studio's cluster games at 26.22%, on a small 6x6 board
- A 94.36% RTP build exists and the casino, not the player, chooses it
- Phantom Treasure at 1 in 3,993.7 base-game spins is effectively unreachable without a feature bet
- 12,000x cap is unremarkable for a 5-of-5 volatility title when stablemates reach 15,000x and 20,000x
