Merlin's Mania is a 6x5 all-scatter slot from Bullshark Games, released on 26 November 2024 and built and distributed on Hacksaw Gaming's OpenRGS platform. The headline numbers are a default RTP of 96.31%, a hit frequency of 35.77%, a maximum win of 12,000x the stake and a volatility rating of 3 out of 5 on the studio's own scale. The demo above runs the studio's free-play build with a play-money balance, so you can watch the mystery symbols and the global multiplier behave without staking anything. It is an 18+ product, and it is not available to UK players — the sheet lists MGA Malta, Curacao, Denmark, Latvia, Spain, the Netherlands, Ontario, Romania, Greece, Portugal, Colombia and Buenos Aires Province, with the UK, Sweden, Germany, Georgia, Italy and Brazil excluded.
How the game plays
There are no paylines and no ways here. Merlin's Mania uses scatter pays across a 30-position grid: land at least 8 matching symbols anywhere on screen and you are paid, with larger clusters of the same symbol paying progressively more. That single rule shapes everything. On a 6x5 field, eight-of-a-kind is a fairly forgiving threshold, which is precisely why the hit rate sits at 35.77% rather than the low-to-mid twenties you see on Bullshark's payline titles.
The core loop is spin, reveal, multiply. Each spin can drop between 2 and 30 mystery symbols, and every mystery symbol on that spin reveals the same random paying icon. That mechanic is the engine of the game: a heavy mystery drop that resolves into a mid or premium symbol is how most meaningful wins are manufactured, rather than through organic symbol clustering. In the base game the global multiplier resets to 1x on every new spin, so each base-game spin is a self-contained event with no carry-over.
The features, and what each does to the maths
Mystery symbols and the global multiplier
Mystery symbols can reveal any paying symbol, an Adder Wild, an Activator Wild or a regular Wild. The global multiplier starts at 1x. Because it resets each base-game spin, base-game volatility is contained by design — the multiplier cannot build, so the ceiling on an ordinary spin is a function of how many mystery symbols land and what they become.
Adder Wild and Activator Wild
The Adder Wild raises the global multiplier when it appears, with additive values of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x and 100x, applied before wins are calculated. The Activator Wild then applies that multiplier to any win it contributes to. This is a two-key system: multiplier value is worthless without an Activator on the grid, which is where a lot of near-misses come from. Both wild types substitute for paying symbols and are removed from the grid after taking part in a win.
Wizard's Favor and Merlin's Insanity
The two free spins rounds change the arithmetic in one crucial way: the global multiplier becomes progressive until the end of the feature rather than resetting. Adder Wilds therefore compound across the round, and the Sticky Activator Wild — available only as a mystery reveal during the features — can lock in place for the duration, meaning every subsequent multiplier increase gets applied to wins it touches. That combination is the only realistic route to the 12,000x cap, which the studio states can be reached in all game modes.
Feature entry and buys
In the base game, any bonus arrives at 1 in 284.3 spins, split into Wizard's Favor at 1 in 313.6 and Merlin's Insanity at a distant 1 in 3,040.8. BonusHunt FeatureSpins shortens the odds considerably — any bonus at 1 in 50.0, Wizard's Favor at 1 in 59.1 and Merlin's Insanity at 1 in 324.7. Published feature RTPs are 96.27% for BonusHunt FeatureSpins, 96.42% for Mystery Madness FeatureSpins, 96.35% for Wizard's Favor and 96.24% for Merlin's Insanity. All four sit within a tenth of a point of the base configuration, which is the honest arrangement: buying is a convenience and a variance choice, not a mathematical trap or an edge.
Reading the maths
A 35.77% hit rate means roughly one spin in three returns something. That is high for this studio and it produces a visibly busy session, but on an all-scatter game the great majority of those returns will be eight-symbol clusters of low-value icons at 1x multiplier — change, not profit. The sensation is of a slow drip rather than long dry runs, which flatters a modest bankroll and makes a session last.
The volatility label of 3 of 5 is defensible but should be read carefully. The base game is genuinely medium: multiplier resets cap what an unlucky or lucky spin can do. The features are not medium at all, and Merlin's Insanity at 1 in 3,040.8 base-game spins is a once-in-many-sessions event for most players. Set expectations accordingly: the 12,000x figure is a tail outcome attached to progressive multipliers and sticky wilds aligning, not a realistic target.
One point of housekeeping. The game ships in two RTP builds — 96.31% and 94.38% — and the operator, not the studio, chooses which one runs. Nearly two full percentage points is a material difference over any volume of play, so check the game's own info screen at your casino before staking, rather than assuming the headline figure. This practice is common across Bullshark's catalogue and worth a habit.
For bankroll, the arithmetic is straightforward. At a base-game bonus rate of 1 in 284.3 spins, expecting to see a feature within a short session is optimistic; a stake size that supports several hundred spins is the sensible floor. Buyers should note that the BonusHunt route at 1 in 50.0 is a spin-shortening tool, not a guarantee of the better feature.
How it compares with other Bullshark titles
| Game | RTP | Hit rate | Max win | Grid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Merlin's Mania | 96.31% | 35.77% | 12,000x | All-scatter (6x5) |
| Merlin's Alchemy | 96.25% | 24.84% | 10,000x | All-scatter (6x5) |
| Clover Club | 96.31% | 25.38% | 12,000x | All-scatter (6x5) |
| Piggy Cluster Hunt | 96.23% | 38.34% | 15,000x | Cluster (7x7) |
Against its own predecessor, Merlin's Mania is the friendlier machine: a near-11-point jump in hit rate over Merlin's Alchemy, a higher cap and a lower volatility rating. Clover Club shares the grid, win type and exact RTP but pays far less often at a higher volatility, so it is the sharper-edged sibling. Piggy Cluster Hunt beats it on frequency and ceiling, though on a different 7x7 cluster engine. Set against the wider Bullshark Games catalogue, this is one of the studio's more accessible releases without being one of its most explosive.
Who it suits and who should skip it
- Suitsplayers who want frequent feedback, a medium base game and a long session from a given bankroll; anyone who found Merlin's Alchemy too dry.
- Suitsbuy-feature players, given four published feature RTPs clustered tightly around the base figure.
- Skipchasers of the 12,000x cap in a short sitting, with Merlin's Insanity at 1 in 3,040.8 base-game spins.
- SkipUK players, who cannot access it, and anyone unwilling to verify which RTP build their operator runs.
Verdict
Merlin's Mania does what its marketing claims. A 96.31% default RTP, a genuinely high 35.77% hit rate and a contained base game add up to an approachable all-scatter title, and the progressive multiplier with a Sticky Activator Wild gives the features real shape without pretending the base game is something it is not. The reservations are the 94.38% build an operator may deploy without fanfare, and the gap between a 3-of-5 volatility badge and a top feature that appears once in roughly 3,041 base-game spins. Those are caveats, not faults, and the maths behind the headline is sound.
Merlin's Mania pros & cons
- High 35.77% hit rate makes for a busy session and a long-lasting bankroll by all-scatter standards
- Default 96.31% RTP sits at the top end of Bullshark's range, and all four feature RTPs land within 0.2 points of it
- Progressive global multiplier plus Sticky Activator Wild gives the free spins a clear, coherent escalation path
- 12,000x cap is reachable in all game modes, including the base game, per the studio
- A 94.38% RTP build exists and operators choose which one runs, so the headline figure is not guaranteed
- Merlin's Insanity at 1 in 3,040.8 base-game spins is effectively out of reach in a normal session
- The 3-of-5 volatility label understates how top-heavy the feature maths actually are
- Not approved for the UK, Sweden, Germany, Italy or Brazil
