Merlin's Alchemy is a 6x5, all-scatter slot from Bullshark Games, released on 30 January 2024 and built and distributed on Hacksaw Gaming's OpenRGS platform. The headline figures are a default RTP of 96.25%, a hit frequency of 24.84%, a maximum win of 10,000x the stake and a volatility rating of 4 out of 5 on the studio's own scale. Default bet levels run from €0.10 to €100.
The demo above runs the studio's free-play build with a play-money balance, so you can watch the mystery-symbol reveals and the global multiplier behave without staking anything. That matters more than usual here, because the shape of this game is not obvious from a paytable alone. It is also worth saying up front: Merlin's Alchemy is approved for Malta, Curacao, Denmark, Latvia, Spain, the Netherlands, Ontario, Romania, Greece, Georgia, Croatia and Italy. It is not available to UK players, nor in Sweden, Germany, Portugal, Colombia or Brazil. 18+ only.
How the game plays
There are no paylines and no ways. Wins are scatter-based: land at least eight matching symbols anywhere on the 6x5 grid and you are paid, regardless of where those symbols sit. With 30 positions available, eight-of-a-kind is a reasonably low bar on paper, which is why the game can still post a roughly one-in-four hit rate despite sitting at 4/5 volatility.
The core loop is built around mystery symbols. These land face-down and then reveal, and critically, every mystery symbol on a given spin reveals the same paying symbol. That single rule is the engine of the whole game. Six scattered mystery tiles are worthless if they reveal independently; because they reveal in unison, a cluster of mystery symbols is effectively a loaded dice roll on an instant eight-plus win. Mystery symbols can also reveal special symbols rather than paying ones, which is where the multiplier mechanics come in.
The features and what they do to the maths
Wilds and Activator Wilds
The standard Wild substitutes for any paying symbol, and if the grid fills entirely with Wilds they pay as the highest symbol in the table. The Activator Wild is the more interesting piece: it substitutes as normal, but it also applies the Global Multiplier to any win it is part of. Land several Activator Wilds in one spin and each applies the multiplier, with those multipliers then added together. Additive stacking is more forgiving than multiplicative stacking in the sense that it produces fewer dead spins, but it also caps how explosive a single base-game spin can realistically get.
The Global Multiplier and the potions
The green potion adds its value to the Global Multiplier, with possible values of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x and 100x. The red potion multiplies the current Global Multiplier. In variance terms this is a classic two-stage ladder: the green potions build a base, the red potion compounds it, and the Activator Wild is the key that actually converts the ladder into cash. Without an Activator Wild on the grid, a large Global Multiplier is stored potential and nothing more. That dependency is precisely why the distribution has such a long right tail.
Spellbook Free Spins
Three or more FS scatters landing simultaneously in the base game trigger the feature: three scatters award 8 spins, four award 10 and five award 12. During free spins the odds of landing mystery symbols increase, and the Sticky Activator Wild appears, locking in place for the remainder of the round. A sticky activator fundamentally changes the maths, because it removes the conversion problem described above: with one parked on the grid, every subsequent multiplier gain is live on every spin. The studio notes the Global Multiplier starts at 1x in free spins unless stated otherwise. The route to 10,000x runs through landing up to 30 transformative mystery symbols, which is to say a full-grid reveal with multipliers attached.
Reading the maths
RTP versions
The game ships in two configurations: 96.25% and 94.28%. Operators choose which one they run, and the difference of nearly two percentage points is substantial over any meaningful volume of play. Always open the game's info or paytable screen at your casino and confirm the figure before you commit a bankroll. The lower-RTP build also carries a marginally different hit rate of 24.73%, so the cut comes partly from frequency rather than purely from payout size.
Hit rate and bonus frequency
A 24.84% hit frequency means roughly one paid spin in four. That sounds generous, but on an all-scatter game at 4/5 volatility a large share of those hits will be minimum eight-symbol combinations returning less than the stake. Treat the hit rate as a measure of how often the screen does something, not how often you profit.
The bonus numbers are where the session shape really lives. In the base game, any bonus triggers once every 236.0 spins, with Spellbook Free Spins at 1 in 236.0 and Spellbook Free Spins 2 at 1 in 247.2. That is a genuinely rare feature by modern standards. Expect long stretches of base play carried entirely by mystery-symbol reveals. The BonusHunt FeatureSpins mode compresses this considerably: any bonus at 1 in 70.8, Spellbook Free Spins at 1 in 70.8 and Spellbook Free Spins 2 at 1 in 74.2, roughly 3.3 times more frequent. The feature RTPs are quoted as 96.23% for BonusHunt FeatureSpins, 96.27% for Spellbook Free Spins and 96.36% for Spellbook Free Spins 2, all clustered tightly around the default. There is no meaningful edge to be had by choosing one entry route over another.
Max win and bankroll
10,000x is the ceiling, equivalent to €1,000,000 on a €100 bet. It is a respectable number but it is the lowest tier in Bullshark's range, and the combination of a 1-in-236 bonus with a 10,000x cap is the main structural criticism I would level at this game. You are paying a steep frequency cost for a prize that several cheaper-to-reach stablemates beat. Practically, size your stake so you can absorb 500 to 750 base spins without the bankroll becoming a problem; averaging two triggers requires roughly 472 spins, and the variance around that average is wide.
How it compares
| Game | RTP | Hit rate | Max win | Grid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Merlin's Alchemy | 96.25% | 24.84% | 10,000x | All-scatter 6x5 |
| Merlin's Mania | 96.31% | 35.77% | 12,000x | All-scatter 6x5 |
| Clover Club | 96.31% | 25.38% | 12,000x | All-scatter 6x5 |
| Ancient Paws | 96.16% | 26.35% | 15,000x | Paylines 5x4 |
Against its own sibling, Merlin's Alchemy is the harder, colder version of Merlin's Mania: eleven points less hit frequency, a lower ceiling and a step up in volatility. Clover Club is the closest structural match and edges it on both RTP and max win. If you want to see how the studio's numbers compare more broadly, the full Bullshark Games catalogue is worth a scan before you settle.
Who it suits and who should skip it
This suits players who enjoy the all-scatter format and specifically enjoy base-game multiplier accumulation, because that is where the vast majority of your spins will be spent. It also suits anyone who prefers a feature that feels earned rather than handed out every eighty spins. If the BonusHunt FeatureSpins mode is available at your casino, it is the sensible route for anyone whose patience is finite.
Skip it if you need regular bonus entry to stay engaged, if you play short sessions on a modest bankroll, or if you are chasing the biggest available ceiling in the studio's range. Also skip the 94.28% build entirely if you can find the 96.25% version elsewhere.
Verdict
Merlin's Alchemy is a well-constructed piece of maths with one awkward compromise at its centre. The mystery-reveal engine, the additive Activator Wild stacking and the green/red potion ladder are genuinely coherent design, and the sticky activator gives Spellbook Free Spins real teeth. The default 96.25% RTP is fair and the feature RTPs are consistent across every entry point, which is a mark of honest configuration. What holds it back is the trade: a 1-in-236 bonus is a long wait for a 10,000x ceiling that siblings reach more often and exceed. Combined with the existence of a 94.28% build you may be unknowingly served, it lands as solid rather than outstanding.
Merlin's Alchemy pros & cons
- Mystery symbols all reveal the same paying symbol, which makes big clusters genuinely meaningful rather than cosmetic
- Sticky Activator Wild in Spellbook Free Spins solves the multiplier-conversion problem and sharpens the bonus considerably
- Feature RTPs (96.23%-96.36%) sit tightly around the default, so no entry route is quietly worse value
- BonusHunt FeatureSpins cuts the bonus wait from 1 in 236.0 to 1 in 70.8 for players who want faster access
- A base-game bonus every 236.0 spins is rare, demanding patience and a sizeable spin budget
- 10,000x is the lowest max win tier in Bullshark's range despite the long trigger wait
- A 94.28% RTP build exists and operators may run it, so the version you get is not guaranteed
- Not available to UK players, and also unapproved in Sweden, Germany, Portugal, Colombia and Brazil
