American Express Casinos: What Actually Works in October 2026

Rarely, and in the UK and EEA not at all. Three separate rules stack up against it:

• Amex’s own merchant rulesAmerican Express’s Merchant Regulations list “Gambling and Gaming for Value” — real-money casino, poker, sports betting and lottery — as a prohibited industry in the EEA and UK, and as a restricted industry needing Amex’s written permission everywhere else. Merchants must not accept the card for transactions in a prohibited industry.
• UK lawSince 14 April 2020, Gambling Commission licence condition 6.1.2 has barred licensed operators from accepting any credit card for gambling, including credit cards used through e-wallets. Ireland introduced the same ban on 5 February 2026.
• Amex UK’s product rangeAmerican Express issues only credit and charge cards in the UK; it has no UK debit card. So there is no UK-issued Amex product a GB-licensed casino may accept.

Put together: if you hold a UK or EU Amex card, no licensed casino serving your market will take it. Outside the EEA and UK, a small number of operators have Amex’s permission to accept it, and even there Amex treats gambling as a cash advance rather than a purchase.

American Express’s UK cardmember agreement charges the cash-advance interest rate on “any gambling or other transactions we’ve told you that we treat as cash”, with a cash-advance fee of 3% (minimum £3) and interest from the day of the transaction — there is no interest-free period. US cardmember agreements define a cash advance to include casino gaming chips, race-track wagers and similar online betting transactions. Rewards schemes routinely exclude cash advances, so a casino deposit earns nothing.

Amex markets several protections, and none of them applies to gambling:

• Purchase Protectionis insurance (underwritten by Chubb) against theft or accidental damage of new physical goods bought from UK retailers within 90 days, up to £2,500 per item with a £50 excess. Its exclusions include cash or cash equivalents and services. A casino deposit is neither insured nor an insurable event.
• SafeKeyis 3-D Secure authentication. It verifies that you are the cardholder; it does not refund anything.
• Global Assistis a 24-hour travel helpline for referrals to lawyers, doctors and interpreters abroad. It has no bearing on payments.
• Chargebacks and Section 75do not apply either. Card-scheme dispute rules exclude gambling transactions, Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act does not cover gambling losses, and it does not apply to Amex charge cards at all.

Treat any casino deposit as final, whatever card you use.

American Express says its cards are accepted at around 160 million merchants in more than 200 countries and territories, and it reported about 153 million cards in force at the end of 2025. That says nothing about casinos. Online casino play is illegal in many countries where the card is common, including China, Japan, France, Egypt and South Africa, and it is regulated at state or provincial level in the United States and Canada. Brazil, which regulated online gambling from 1 January 2025, and a handful of US states are among the few markets with both a licensed casino sector and permitted Amex acceptance. Even there, expect deposits only: Amex publishes no push-to-card payout product for consumers, so a casino that takes Amex will normally pay winnings out by bank transfer or e-wallet.

American Express UK offers 24/7 phone support (the number on the back of your card) and 24/7 chat in the Amex app once you are logged in. It does not publish an email support address or response-time commitments. Amex is the sole issuer of its cards in the UK, so there is no separate “issuing bank” to contact. For a casino payment query, the casino is the first port of call — but bear in mind that a UK Amex card should not have been accepted for gambling in the first place.
