Michigan legalised online casino games with the Lawful Internet Gaming Act of 2019, and the first sites went live at noon on 22 January 2021. The Michigan Gaming Control Board regulates them alongside the Detroit casinos, online sports betting and fantasy contests.

The same page lists the operators the MGCB has sent cease-and-desist letters to. It is a long list, with offshore casinos and sweepstakes sites among them. A site on that list has no Michigan regulator behind it, which means nobody to complain to if a withdrawal is refused.

Gambling winnings are taxable income in Michigan, as they are federally. Michigan’s individual income tax rate for the 2026 tax year is 4.25%. Since the 2021 tax year a casual gambler can deduct wagering losses on the Michigan return, but only the losses claimed as an itemised deduction on the federal return for the same year, and never more than the winnings. Michigan’s online casinos reported $303.0 million in gross receipts for August 2026, according to the MGCB’s monthly release. Adjusted gross receipts were up 17.6% on August 2025, and the operators paid $61.2 million in state taxes and fees for the month.
